Description
All information stated here comes from prior ownerand
from
internet
experts(i am the 4th owner),so it is very
important that
you read this
whole item description
section from beginning to end as i am not an expert
on Fly Fishing Rods and so you can know
exactly what
you are buying. Thank you.
This whole rod will be described to the best of my
ability - please view all pictures as they are part of
the description.
**************************************************************************
This is what i know about this rod: This rod was given to the person
who sold
it to me in 1970 (50+ years ago) and he stated to me that
he
never
used it.
He also stated to me that the person who gave it to him was a
fisherman
and a collector and that he (2nd owner) had traded 2
of his most
prized
lures for this rod.
The person who sold it to me stated
that the person who gave it to
him when he was a child
(a WWll Veteran) had told
him many stories
about fishing and about
this particular rod, and one of the stories that
he remembers is of this
rod being sent to the 2nd
owner during World
War lI where he was
stationed HERE in the U.S.,
so what i am trying
to say is that the 2nd
owner already had it with him in the early 40's, so
it's possible
that the 1st owner could have bought it
in
the 19
30's
.
************************************************************************************
1.) The end rod measures approximately 39 1/4" and the middle and top
rod measure approximately 38 7/8"(each), for a total of 115" total if i am
correct.
2.) 3 piece Hexagonal (split bamboo).
3.) The ferrules are in excellent condition - all 3 pieces
fit tight and perfect.
4.) The seat is in excellent condition with no scratches
at all(i don't see any scratches on it) as if it was just
made yesterday - prior owners really took care of it.
5.) The seat and the big eye that you see on Main photo
and Photo # 9 appears to be made of acelate/bakelite,
based on my research(i could be wrong).
6.) It weight 8.3 oz (see pic# 10).
7.) The model logo of 'BEAN'S ATLANTIC SALMON' is written
in GOLD letters.
8.) It comes with a very nice and clean classy sock and also
9.) what appears to be a very desirable heavy duty hard to find
1940's aluminum
tube with brass end.
AGAIN; I AM NOT an expert on fly rods but i can honestly say
that this whole rod is in very, very nice original condition
for its age - i see no obstruction to the bamboo and no major
cracks on the cork.
This rod was extremely well made/professionally made(my opinion) - it is very smooth
and still has the original SUPER, SUPER CLEAN varnish and the true original patina
colors that you just CAN NOT get overnight.
IMPORTANT; I DO see one of the eye missing the wrap(i believe that's what is
called, i could be wrong), and also a little wrap towards the end
of the rod next to the cork - nothing that looks bad but definitely
something that you might want to fix/add before use(i'm assuming).
This piece displays super fantastic and definitely without a
doubt a great addition to any fly fishing rod collection.
Last but not least: Many experts say that this rod was made
by Union Hardware for L.L.BEAN, while other experts say that
it was made by Horton/Bristol Edwards - experts state that the
complex and contentious history of this fly rod makes it all the
more interesting.
**********************************************************************
IMPORTANT: Based on my extensive research i only found 1
of this SAME fly fishing rod.
The very famous Thomas Rod Company(makers of fine bamboo fishing rods
and also sellers of other fine fly fishing rods)mentions this particular rod but they
don't show how much they sold it for - (usually their rare rods sell at very, very high
prices).

On Jul-06-21 at 19:45:11 PDT, seller added the following information:
I have done a little more research on this L.L. BEAN INC
fly rod and this is what i found out from experts:
It's been said that this reel seat is a typical Horton real
seat as are the ferrules, and that Bill and Gene Edwards
worked for Horton Mfg in the 30's that according to Patrick
Garner's great book, Gene was in charge of the
higher grade
Edwards Bristol Rods and Bill was in charge
of the less expensive
line.
AGAIN; What i have here for your today is something that you are not
going
to see again any time soon - an Extremely Rare L.L. BEAN INC
"Bean's Atlantic Salmon" Model Fly Fish Rod,
hand crafted by a Master
Craftsman(more than likely by Gene Edwards) back in
the 1930's.

fantastic find!
